Mario Buhagiar is Professor of History of Art at the University of Malta and was for twenty-five years head of the Department which he founded. He is a Member of the Order of Merit (MOM) of the Republic of Malta and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries London (FSA). His areas of specialisation are Early Christian, Byzantine and Medieval Antiquities and the Art and Architecture of the Knights of St John. He is the author of specialised books and studies on art and archaeology.
